Adapters

Adapters are small targets that provide functionality and/or data in an outdated application. Our use of the term includes not only programs, but also the basis for designing and developing adaptation programs. Adapters can be deceptively complex because clunky adapters perform many functions, including event detection, data collection and transformation, and communication with a framework, integration pack, or other middleware. However, lightweight adapters can only encapsulate the application's own interface and provide a standard interface for the application. Adapters can also handle exceptions and can often adapt dynamically (or with minor reconfiguration) to new versions of the source or target application.

Adapters are often sold with integration middleware products, such as ESBs, integration packs, or portal servers, or are offered as standalone products, such as a set of adapters. Among the various adapters, the high-level categories include technical and application adapters.

The complete set must include adapters for:

• Common technologies such as COM, Enterprise JavaBeans and web services
• Industry protocols such as EDI, Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications and RosettaNet.
• Common applications such as SAP or PeopleSoft
