Definition of Lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP):

  1. Open (non-proprietary) standard for storing and retrieving names, addresses, phone numbers and other recorded information from an online directory. Based on X.500 standard, but significantly simpler and smaller, LDAP supports TCP/IP for internet access. Also called X.500 Lite.
