Transit item - How To Discuss

By David Schmidt

Transit item,

Definition of Transit item:

  1. A transit item is any check or draft that is issued by an institution other than the bank where it was initially deposited. Transit items are separated from internal transactions involving checks that were written by a bank's own customers. Transit items are submitted to the drawee's bank through either direct presentation or via a local clearing house.

  2. Let’s say John writes Susan a personal check in the amount of $50, drawn from his checking account at Wells Fargo. Susan takes the personal check to her own bank, Bank of America, to deposit it in her own checking account. Because the item is drawn from an account in a different bank from where it is being deposited, it is a transit item.

  3. Any check or draft that is not issued by the bank where it is deposited in. For example if your bank is Citibank, and you deposit a check issued by Bank of America, this counts as a transit item. These items are separated from checks issued by the banks own customers and sent to the issuing bank either directly, via a Federal Reserve Bank, or through a check clearing house.

How to use Transit item in a sentence?

  2. A transit item is a inter-bank transaction where a check or draft is made at one bank to deposited at another bank.
  3. Depositing a check at your bank that was written by somebody who is a customer at a different bank is a common example of a transit item.
